Health is influenced by the environments in which people live, work and spend their everyday lives. Clean water, safe sanitation, air quality, waste management, housing conditions and exposure to environmental hazards can all contribute to the health of individuals and communities.
World Environmental Health Day highlights the connection between environmental conditions and human wellbeing. It encourages greater awareness of the factors that can create health risks and the importance of preventative measures that protect communities from avoidable environmental harm.
Creating healthier environments requires cooperation at many levels. Individuals can make informed choices in their own surroundings, while communities, organisations and public services all have roles to play in maintaining conditions that support healthier lives.
