Breast cancer does not always begin with pain. A new lump, change in breast shape or size, skin changes, nipple changes or unusual discharge can sometimes be signs that need medical attention.
Knowing how your breasts normally look and feel can make it easier to notice changes. Screening can also help detect breast cancer before symptoms develop, although the appropriate screening approach depends on factors such as age, personal risk and medical history.
Breast changes are not automatically cancer, but they should not be ignored. If you notice something unusual that persists or concerns you, arrange an assessment with a healthcare professional rather than trying to diagnose the cause yourself.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is also an opportunity to think beyond October. Regular healthcare appointments, understanding your personal risk and knowing when to seek advice can all form part of looking after your health throughout the year.
