World Stroke Day

World Stroke Day

Every minute can make a difference

World Stroke Day follows closely within National Stroke Week, bringing the focus to one of the most important messages in stroke awareness: act quickly.

A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted or when a blood vessel in the brain bleeds. Brain cells can be damaged when they do not receive enough oxygen, which is why urgent medical treatment matters.

Remember the warning signs. Facial weakness, arm weakness and speech difficulties are key signs to watch for, alongside sudden problems with vision, balance or severe headache.

Do not drive someone yourself if an ambulance can be called. Emergency medical teams can begin assessment and care on the way to hospital.

In South Africa
call 10177 or 112 from a mobile phone during a medical emergency.
