HASA Awareness August

World Mosquito Day

Small insects can have a big impact on global health

A mosquito bite may seem harmless, yet mosquitoes remain one of the world’s deadliest animals because they can spread diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever and Zika virus. Protecting ourselves from mosquito borne diseases begins with understanding how they spread and the simple measures that can help prevent them.

Observed each year on 20 August, World Mosquito Day commemorates the scientific discovery that mosquitoes transmit malaria while raising awareness of mosquito borne diseases and the importance of prevention. The campaign highlights the role of public health initiatives, research and community action in reducing the spread of these illnesses.

Simple steps such as using insect repellent, sleeping under mosquito nets where appropriate, eliminating standing water and seeking prompt medical attention when symptoms develop can help protect individuals and communities. World Mosquito Day reminds us that prevention remains one of our strongest tools in protecting public health.
