World Alzheimer’s Day

Supporting memories, dignity and connection

Alzheimer’s disease can gradually affect memory, thinking, communication and a person’s ability to manage familiar activities. While the condition affects individuals differently, changes can also have a profound effect on spouses, children, friends and other caregivers.

World Alzheimer’s Day encourages greater understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and the broader experience of dementia. It provides an opportunity to challenge the idea that memory loss should simply be accepted as an unavoidable part of ageing and encourages people to seek appropriate medical advice when concerning changes occur.

Care and support should continue to recognise the individual behind the diagnosis. Patience, familiar routines, meaningful connection and respectful communication can help preserve dignity and quality of life while giving caregivers a better understanding of how to support their loved ones.
