Burns can be caused by hot liquids, flames, steam, hot surfaces, chemicals, electricity and other sources of heat. They can range from minor injuries that affect a small area of skin to serious burns requiring urgent medical treatment.
Burns Awareness Month highlights the importance of recognising common risks in the home, workplace and other environments. Simple precautions, such as keeping hot liquids away from children and taking care around cooking equipment, can help reduce the likelihood of burns occurring.
When a burn does happen, appropriate first aid can make an important difference. A minor thermal burn should generally be cooled under cool running water for at least 20 minutes as soon as possible. Serious burns, extensive burns, electrical or chemical burns, and burns involving sensitive areas such as the face or genitals require urgent medical assessment.
