Navigating the Recent NHI Controversy

Recently, a controversy occurred when several newspapers reported that there was division within the government regarding the National Health Insurance. The newspapers based their reporting, here, and here, on a letter apparently written by a Treasury official. In response, a statement was released and very shortly after this, newspapers published follow up articles, here and here, in which assurances were given that concerns raised by the Treasury official had in fact been resolved. HASA continues to participate in collaborative discussions, including at the Presidential Health Summit, with the aim of agreeing practical and realisable objectives that will resolve the very real and steep challenges that face healthcare in South Africa today, and in the future.
