Youth Day

Youth Day

Remembering the courage that changed a nation

Some moments in history continue to shape generations long after they have passed. On 16 June 1976, thousands of South African learners stood together to protest against unequal education, leaving a legacy of courage, resilience and determination that continues to inspire the country today.

Observed annually on 16 June, Youth Day honours the young people whose bravery became a turning point in South Africa’s history while recognising the role today’s youth play in shaping the country’s future. It is a day to reflect on the progress that has been made and the opportunities still needed to help young people thrive.

Investing in education, healthcare and supportive communities empowers young people to reach their full potential. Youth Day reminds us that every generation has the ability to create positive change, and that the future is strengthened when young voices are heard, valued and supported.
