Hearing plays an important role in communication, learning, social development and everyday connection. Hearing loss can occur at any stage of life and may result from factors such as infections, injury, certain medicines, genetic conditions or prolonged exposure to loud sounds.
World Hearing Day raises awareness about preventing hearing loss and ensuring people have access to appropriate ear and hearing care. In 2026, the campaign focuses particularly on children, highlighting the importance of identifying hearing problems early so that children can receive appropriate support and have the best possible opportunity to hear, learn and develop.
Some hearing problems can be prevented or treated when identified early. Parents, caregivers and educators can play an important role by paying attention to signs that a child may be struggling to hear, particularly if they have difficulty following instructions, responding to sounds or developing speech and language as expected.
World Hearing Day also reminds us that hearing care should be accessible and inclusive. Early support can make a meaningful difference to communication, education and quality of life.
