SunSmart Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Enjoy the sunshine without forgetting your skin

South Africa’s summer months are often associated with long, sunny days, outdoor activities and more time spent in the sun. Too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage the skin and increase the risk of skin cancer.

SunSmart Skin Cancer Awareness Month runs from 1 December to 31 January, covering the peak summer period and encouraging people to think about how they protect themselves when spending time outdoors.

Simple precautions can help reduce UV exposure. Spending time in the shade, wearing protective clothing, using sunscreen appropriately and avoiding unnecessary exposure during periods of intense sunlight can all help protect your skin.

Sun protection is not only something to think about when you are at the beach. Everyday activities such as walking, gardening, working outdoors or watching sport can also involve significant sun exposure.

Remember:
Sun protection is about reducing your exposure to UV radiation over time, not avoiding the sun completely.
