HASA Awareness August

Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease Awareness Week

Small symptoms should never be overlooked

A sore throat may seem like a minor inconvenience, but when left untreated in certain cases, it can lead to serious complications affecting the heart. Many people are unaware that early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help prevent rheumatic fever and the long term damage it may cause.

Observed from 1 to 7 August, Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease Awareness Week raises awareness of these preventable conditions while encouraging early medical care, especially for children and young people who are most at risk. The campaign also promotes education around recognising symptoms and completing prescribed treatment.

Preventing rheumatic heart disease often begins with recognising the importance of simple healthcare interventions. By seeking medical attention when symptoms appear and improving access to early treatment, we can help protect heart health and reduce preventable complications.
