Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by having an extra copy of chromosome 21. It can influence development and may be associated with certain health conditions, but it does not determine a person’s personality, abilities or potential.
National Down Syndrome Day provides an opportunity to challenge assumptions and focus on inclusion. People with Down syndrome can learn, work, build relationships and participate in their communities when they have appropriate opportunities and support.
Access to healthcare is also important. Some health conditions occur more frequently in people with Down syndrome, making appropriate medical monitoring part of supporting long term wellbeing.
The most useful starting point is simple: see the person, not the diagnosis.
