Iodine is needed for the thyroid gland to produce hormones that support metabolism, growth and development. The body only requires a small amount, but insufficient iodine can cause health problems.
Iodine deficiency is particularly important during pregnancy and childhood because thyroid hormones play a role in brain development.
In many countries, iodised salt is an important source of iodine. This does not mean that more salt is better for your health, however. The goal is adequate iodine intake while keeping overall salt consumption within recommended limits.
If you are concerned about your iodine intake, particularly during pregnancy, speak with a healthcare professional rather than taking supplements without advice.
