HASA Awareness August

African Traditional Medicine Week

Honouring generations of healing knowledge

Long before modern healthcare systems were established, communities across Africa relied on traditional medicine to care for their health and wellbeing. Passed down through generations, this knowledge continues to play an important role in the lives of millions of people, reflecting the continent’s rich cultural heritage and diverse healing practices.

Observed from 26 to 31 August, African Traditional Medicine Week celebrates the contribution of traditional medicine while encouraging safe practices, scientific research and greater collaboration between traditional and conventional healthcare systems. The campaign also highlights the importance of protecting indigenous knowledge and ensuring it continues to benefit future generations.

Traditional medicine and modern healthcare each have an important role to play in improving health outcomes. By promoting respectful collaboration, evidence informed practices and patient centred care, we can help create stronger healthcare systems that serve the diverse needs of African communities.
