HASA Awareness August

African Traditional Medicine Day

Celebrating Africa’s rich healing heritage

For generations, traditional medicine has been an important part of healthcare across Africa, offering knowledge and practices rooted in culture, history and community. Many people continue to rely on traditional healers and indigenous remedies as part of their approach to health and wellbeing, highlighting the lasting value of this shared heritage.

Observed annually on 31 August, African Traditional Medicine Day recognises the contribution of traditional medicine to healthcare across the continent. The day encourages the preservation of indigenous knowledge, supports ongoing research and promotes the safe, responsible integration of traditional and conventional healthcare where appropriate. It also provides an opportunity to acknowledge the role traditional practitioners play within many communities.

As healthcare continues to evolve, there is value in recognising the diverse approaches that contribute to healthier lives. African Traditional Medicine Day reminds us that respecting cultural knowledge, encouraging collaboration and supporting evidence informed practices can help strengthen healthcare systems while preserving an important part of Africa’s identity.
