Our members comprise the two stock exchange-listed private hospital organisations in the country –Life Healthcare and Netcare – and recently delisted Mediclinic, as well as independent non-listed groups like Lenmed Group and Joint Medical Holdings and smaller facilities. Aggregated, HASA members provide a range of facilities, including acute care hospitals, day hospitals, renal centres, mental health and rehabilitation centres, such that HASA members together have a national footprint, and some have operations in neighbouring countries. Life Healthcare, one of the largest private healthcare providers in Southern Africa – with 15 000 permanent employees – offers specialist, focused, multi-disciplinary hospital and related healthcare services at 64 medical facilities extended over seven SA provinces.
The Mediclinic Group manages approximately 20% of the Southern African private hospital sector and holds a 29.9% interest in Spire Healthcare plc, a private hospital group in the United Kingdom. It comprises Mediclinic Southern Africa (including Namibia) with 51 full-service hospitals and 4 day clinics; Mediclinic Middle East, which operates through 7 hospitals and 22 clinics with more than 900 hospital beds; and Hirslanden, which operates 18 hospitals and 4 clinics in Switzerland. Mediclinic focuses on providing acute care, specialist-orientated, multi-disciplinary hospital and related services.
The Netcare Group employs just over 30 000 people and operates the largest private hospital, primary healthcare, emergency medical services and renal care network in South Africa. Netcare also owns the Akeso Behavioural Healthcare Group through which it offers psychiatric services across the country.

The Day Hospital Association first came into being in 1992, ahead of its time in South Africa and part of the private healthcare industry, a complex landscape that would undergo numerous changes and be affected by various sectors and role-players over the following 20 years.
