Along with the rest of South Africa, the Hospital Association of South Africa has watched events unfold in Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and elsewhere where fires have caused loss of life, homes, and property, with great sadness.
We extend our sincere condolences to those who have lost loved ones, and in particular to the families of those who bravely fought against the raging fires.
We also appreciate the efforts and sacrifices of those who have sustained injuries in fighting the blaze.
Our thoughts are with those who have lost so much in the fires – in some cases their entire belongings.
We note the difficulties our colleagues in health care are experiencing is trying to get their services back up and running, and in particular those who work at hospitals in the area that have unfortunately had to close down for a period. They have our whole-hearted support and we are certain their efforts on behalf of people in the area will be recognised and appreciated.
It is in times like this that South African resilience and collaboration will come to the fore, even as the suffering of many in the area will be felt by us all.
