Dr Paul Soko joins the Hospital Association of South Africa (HASA) Board
Monday, 02 October 2017. Cape Town: At the Hospital Association of South Africa (HASA) Annual General Meeting held during the Association’s just-completed conference in Cape Town, Dr Paul Soko of Life Healthcare was elected to the Board of Directors.
He is an executive of Life Healthcare’s Clinical Directorate and holds an MBChB and a Master of Philosophy degree in Economic Policy. In addition, he holds a Postgraduate Diploma in HIV Management and a Postgraduate Diploma in Child Health.
“Dr Soko’s experience in clinical governance and quality and risk management at different organisations, both in the hospital and funder sectors, along with his strong academic background will make him an invaluable member of the Board, as HASA engages in health care reform and seeks opportunities to collaborate in initiatives that will benefit all South Africans,” says the re-elected Chairman of the Board of HASA, Melanie Da Costa.
Melanie Da Costa is Director Strategy and Health Policy at Netcare. Dr Biren Valodia who is Chief Marketing Officer at Mediclinic will continue as Deputy Chairman of HASA, and Tienie van der Berg who is Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital General Managers, retains his role as Treasurer.
One Board seat remains vacant following the passing away of Kurt Worrall-Clare, the acting Chief Executive of the National Hospital Network. Nominations will be invited from members and an appointment will be made in due course.
The remainder of the Board is as follows:
Ms Lynelle Bagwandeen – Company Secretary and General Counsel at Netcare; Mr Amil Devchand – Chairman of the National Hospital Network and Chief Operating officer at Lenmed; Ms Clara Findlay – Head of Legal Services at Mediclinic; and Matthew Prior – Executive of Funder Relations and Health Policy.
Dr Dumisani Bomela is the Chief Executive Officer of HASA and sits on the Board as an executive, unaligned to the organisation’s membership.

About HASA.
HASA is a voluntary, non-profit association of the majority of private hospitals in South Africa. It is funded by its members through subscription fees based on the number of hospital beds of each member.
HASA is mandated by its members to lead the industry by engaging proactively with government and other stakeholders on policy and legislative matters, to represent the interests of its members and the private sector in appropriate forums, to facilitate independent research to inform national health policy and healthcare reform, and to serve the interests of patients by promoting quality care and patient safety.
To fulfil its mandate, HASA is governed by a Board of Directors. As the accounting authority, the Board has specific committees, namely Communications and Advocacy Committee, the Research Committee, the Clinical Quality Committee and the Legal and Compliance Committee. Board members are nominated annually by HASA members. HASA’s administrative office, comprising a non-aligned Chief Executive Officer, an Executive Head of Public Affairs, an Executive for Health Service Delivery and support staff, support the Board and each committee and implement HASA’s engagement, advocacy and lobbying outputs, as well as its research and clinical quality work.
