The term “supplier-induced demand” has gained some attention recently in healthcare circles, but what is it, how should it be measured, and how is it misused? These are questions considered in this interview of economics and competition consultancy Econex by the Hospital Association of South Africa. Pertinently, given the healthcare market inquiry is scheduled to release a report on supplier-induced demand in the private healthcare sector in South Africa, a short history of research in the topic is given and some guidelines for what comprises a rigorous research project are provided in the interview.
