The Hospital Association of South Africa congratulates Shakira Choonara on being recognised as “The Woman of the Year in Healthcare” at the Woman of Stature Awards Ceremony in Johannesburg. According to Charlotte du Pleiss, “Woman of Stature’s mission is to empower, educate, upskill, connect and support women, and to offer a platform that helps raise funds for charity. As part of our mission, we host an annual gala dinner to honour those South African women who make a significant contribution to the economy and their respective communities.” According to the RESYST web site, Shakira is currently pursuing her PhD in public health and is passionate about improving health systems in low and middle income county settings. Her research, on the micro-practices of governance in health systems is being undertaken as part of the RESYST research consortium and Shakira has recently published a journal publication about leadership development in health systems.
